The year 2021 was coming to a close, and the public was anticipating yet another year of pandemics and other unexpected challenges in people's lives. Individually, everyone has a tale worth sharing; I had one, you had one; yet, we don't have time to hear everyone's narrative since we need it to continue, right? We won't be able to put an end to a tale unless the person who is telling it does so. But there is one story in particular that I enjoy telling: Jessica and Arya's story

Jessica and Arya, too, had their own stories to share; they faced numerous challenges, dealt with a variety of situations, and learned a lot throughout that year. This is not, however, a tale about their lives; rather, it is a story about how they spent the last day of the year together and built their hopes.

As the new year's midnight approached, the Ramanujan grounds were entirely packed with people. They had all come to view the spectacular fireworks that light up the sky every year to welcome in the new year. Then they dance, drink, and have a good time for the remainder of the evening. Jessica, on the other hand, had other ideas; this time she simply wanted to watch the beautiful fireworks by herself, standing alone on a terrace of a building opposite the grounds.

Jessica turned 18 in October of that year, and she was excited to be an adult, but she felt as if she had accomplished nothing in her life thus far. She felt suddenly accountable for her activities and regretted how she had wasted her high school years with several diversions. However, in 2022, she hoped to be a better person for herself, to be happy and pleased with herself.

It was 11:30 p.m., thirty minutes before the start of a new year and a new chapter in her life. She was gazing at the stars, faraway big ugly bodies that, when seen from the earth, from a distance of light-years, appear to be sparkling and, when seen together, appear to be rather lovely. While she was thinking about all of this, she heard footsteps coming, and it was a tall, slender man with spectacles.

Arya took a hesitant step onto the terrace when he observed Jessica standing nearby. He recognized her, he knew who she was, but he hadn't expected her to show up for this special occasion. They both hoped to spend the first few days of the new year alone, but they weren't expecting the unexpected visitors to arrive. "Hi," he said as he went gently towards her. She grinned back because she recognizes him as Arya, the smartest student in the class but is also a friendly guy

“Hey! Isn't it been a while? How are you?" Jessica inquired.

"Yeah, I'm fantastic," he says "How about.... did you come to watch the fireworks as well?" he responded

“Yep! I just wanted to see it alone, to enjoy it detailly rather than following the crowd over there”

Arya became more at ease and began to go ahead. “Oh! "Did I....disturb you?"

"No, that's not it, It's okay," she responded, chuckling, "I know you won't interrupt me and my new year."

“To be honest, I am here for the same reason too,” Arya told

“Haha! How was your 2021 by the way?” She asked

Arya was one of the most brilliant students in the city. He is well-known for his grades, abilities, and participation in sports and other activities, but the main problem is that he has never learned how to communicate with others, not because he is a nerd who dislikes social interactions. His major goal in becoming popular was to make a large number of friends, but he was unable to accomplish so. He failed to establish any friends that year, although he improved as a person, he felt lonely to even share his accomplishments. All he wants for the new year is new bonds and to learn from his mistakes of not making any friends.

"All I want for is a wonderful new year," Arya remarked

"It's always nice to think about a new year and new starts, but the trouble is....we never do it," Jessica stated

This made them both giggle. It was 11:50 when Arya checked his watch. He, too, took a big breath and looked up at the stars. One of his key areas of interest is the stars and space. He spends the entire night fantasizing about approaching a star and taking a close look at it.

While Jessica was waiting for the fireworks, he took a glance at her and realized that he used to like her, and he still does. He'd known her for two years and had just recently begun to like her. He expected her to be on that terrace alone that day, he wanted to meet her and finally tell her how he felt. He couldn't wait any longer, and he figured this would be a great opportunity because they hadn't met since her birthday in October.

Do I have to tell her? I believe I should, and I will not be late. The worst she can do is reject me... she understands, I'm sure.

That was something he told himself again and over. As he got closer to her and eventually opened his mouth to say, I like you

As he was about to say, a firecracker burst. He came to his senses, he realized this can’t be the right occasion to tell because if she didn’t like him it would ruin her new year. He stepped back and looked away. The firecracker was set on accidentally and he was very grateful it happened because it made him realize not to tell her so soon.

Jessica observed that he was acting strangely, and she peered into his eyes, which indicated that he wanted to say something. Her eyes widened as she stared at him for a long time. She is also a big fan of his. She had a crush on him for two years before they met. She knew Arya came to this terrace every year to watch the fireworks, and she wanted to tell him how she felt and confess everything, but an unintentional firecracker explosion jolted her back to reality, and she backed away. She had previously missed her chance three times, but this time she decided to wait and tell at a later time.

It was 12 a.m., the first minute of the year, and it was the new year. They were both excited to see the fireworks. A sequence of beautiful firecrackers shot up into the sky one by one, creating one of the most beautiful views from their vantage point. They both stood there watching the fireworks go off, hoping that their year would be as exciting as this one and that all of the bright colours would come into their lives.

This year, I'll undoubtedly be a better person, and I'll be ready to confess my feelings for him, Jessica reasoned.

Arya stared at Jessica and thought to himself, I'm sure I'll make more friends, and I'll desire more than a friendship with you. I'm sure I'll stay ahead of my next opportunity to tell you my thoughts.

"Happy New Year!" They both said their goodbyes and walked away.

"I'm sure I'll tell him."
 "I'm sure I'll tell her."
They both admitted to themselves that this was not the first time they had considered it. They have no idea how they feel about one another. Are they wasting an opportunity? Are they going to be able to meet up again? Will they confess that time, even if they meet? They both liked the bright lights of the new year's fireworks, but when will they be able to see the bright lights of love that will brighten their new lives?

THE END
